My Lipedema Diagnosis: A Turning Point in My Health Journey
For most of my life, I thought I was just unlucky when it came to my body—especially my legs. Despite eating clean, exercising, and doing all the "right" things, I struggled with disproportionate fat in my lower body, visible cellulite, and constant frustration. It never made sense… until late last year when I stumbled across something called LIPEDEMA!
It was a huge “ah-ha” moment. Everything started to make sense. I had never heard of Lipedema before, but suddenly I was seeing my story reflected in countless other women. I started doing more research, spoke with my care providers, and eventually received an official diagnosis: Stage 1 Lipedema.
What Is Lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic condition affecting the fat tissue, primarily in the legs, hips, and sometimes arms. It’s characterized by symmetrical fat accumulation, often painful to the touch, resistant to diet and exercise, and prone to easy bruising. It almost exclusively affects women and is believed to be hormonally and genetically influenced.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the stages:
Stage 1: Smooth skin but noticeable fat buildup in the legs; frequent bruising (my current stage).
Stage 2: Uneven, dimpled skin and growing discomfort or pain.
Stage 3: Larger, hardened fat masses with lobular formations; mobility may be affected.
Stage 4: Lipo-lymphedema—when lymphatic dysfunction adds significant swelling and inflammation.
Although I don’t currently experience pain, I’ve always bruised easily and experienced swelling, which are common signs. Understanding the condition has helped me connect the dots not only about my body.
The Psychological Impact of Lipedema
Living with undiagnosed Lipedema can take a serious emotional toll. For years, I blamed myself. I thought I just wasn't working hard enough. The scale wouldn’t budge, clothes wouldn’t fit, and the self-talk became harsher and more critical.
Now that I understand what’s going on in my body, I can finally stop blaming myself. This diagnosis brought not just clarity—but compassion. The shift in mindset has been incredibly freeing and healing.
Gut Health, Inflammation & Diet
Lipedema is deeply tied to systemic inflammation, which is why diet plays such a crucial role in managing symptoms. The keto diet is often referred to as the gold standard for Lipedema because of its anti-inflammatory effects and ability to reduce fluid retention.
I gave keto a try, but unfortunately, my gut (and my ulcerative colitis) didn’t agree with the high-fat, low-carb balance. It caused digestive distress that just weren’t sustainable for me long-term.
Instead, I’ve stuck with an anti-inflammatory diet, which I’ve been following for the past five years. It’s been a huge part of my healing—not only for my gut but now for managing Lipedema as well.
Compression Therapy: A Game Changer
Another key aspect of Lipedema management is compression therapy. I recently received my first pair of compression leggings (15–20 mmHg) and was so grateful to have them covered by my insurance. These garments help support lymphatic flow and reduce swelling. They’re not the most comfortable to day to day, so I’ve been wearing them to bed.
It’s still early days, but I’m already noticing the benefits in how my legs feel—more supported, less heavy, and more energized.
My Favourite Supplement: Inflammatone
When it comes to managing inflammation naturally, one of my go-to supplements is Inflammatone by Designs for Health. It’s a powerful blend of botanicals, enzymes, and nutrients designed to support a healthy inflammatory response.
This supplement has been part of my routine for years, and I continue to lean on it now more than ever as I support my body through this new chapter.
